People come back, diaries fill up, and the urgent matters left pending make themselves felt again. It is at this point, more than at any other time of year, that a company decides whether the months ahead will resemble the ones behind it, or whether something will genuinely change.

The return from the break can be experienced in two ways: as the simple reactivation of a routine that was put on pause, or as a starting point. The difference lies not in energy, which comes back within a few days, but in the choice and motivation of those who lead the organisation.

The Value of Distance

The clearest ideas often arrive away from the desk. During time off, there is room to look at one’s company from a certain distance and to notice what, in the daily routine, stays out of focus: a process that is slowing down, an activity that repeats every week, a bottleneck that has come to be accepted as normal. That clarity is a precious resource, and the return to work is the moment to turn it into a decision.

The Project Postponed “Until After the Summer”

In almost every organisation there is an improvement project that was set aside in June with the promise of picking it up again in September. It might concern throughput times, on-time delivery, first-pass quality or materials management. If it does not find space in the first few weeks, it risks being absorbed by the urgent matters that have piled up and postponed once again.

The companies that truly grow are not the ones without urgent matters. They are the ones that, despite having them, set aside time and attention for what moves them forward, not merely what keeps them afloat.

Where to Begin: Three Practical Choices

Choose a measurable project. An objective tied to a clear indicator, such as Lead Time, OTD (On-Time Delivery) or First Pass Yield, makes improvement verifiable over time rather than a mere statement of intent.

Start from the process, not the solution. Observing on the ground how work really flows, and mapping flows and activities, makes it possible to identify causes before acting on symptoms. Every company has a process that is simply waiting to be read again with fresh attention: it is often there that the most tangible room for improvement lies hidden. Ogni azienda ha un processo che attende solo di essere riletto con attenzione: spesso è lì che si nasconde il margine di miglioramento più concreto.

Involve the people who live the process every day. An improvement lasts when people feel it is their own and sustain it with daily discipline.

A Method That Stays in the Company

Lean, Lean Six Sigma, Agile and Project Management offer a shared language and discipline for tackling change in a structured way. AGMC supports companies through consulting, to map, analyse and transform critical processes; through training, with hands-on workshops rather than theory; through management, taking responsibility for results or guiding strategic and operational decisions; and through tailored solutions, to make improvement sustainable and fitted to each organisation. Results are measured in speed, efficiency, quality and on-time delivery.

The goal is always the same: to leave behind in the company a method that keeps working long after the project has ended.

A Choice That Can Begin Now

Continuous improvement is not an event: it is a choice that is renewed. The return from the summer break is one of the moments when making that choice comes most naturally, and the same is true of every other restart in a company’s year. Il rientro dalle vacanze è uno dei momenti in cui compierla è più naturale, e lo stesso vale per ogni altra ripartenza dell’anno.

To those who lead a company: what will be the project or change that finally finds its place this season?

September marks a fresh start for every company.
